Approximately 80% of both items in my home and in my wardrobe were previously owned by someone else. This is one aspect of sustainability I am pretty serious about.

Clothes.

Purchasing previously owned clothing gives the opportunity to buy items that are great quality at a good price. The items above are a few of my favorite things in my wardrobe that I have picked up at a second hand store. All of these pieces are trendy and were all under $15. The key when shopping for used clothing.. actually when shopping for any piece of clothing new or used.. is to look for the materials used in the piece, reputable brands, and style. I usually have a list of items I have been looking for.

Why buy new if you can get the thrill of shopping, spend minimal money and have pieces that can last you a season, maybe more.

Our culture is so consumed with purchasing the latest trends. This is one way to do that and not overspend and not add to the landfills another ‘new’ piece of clothing (aka fast fashion).

Accessories.

It is great the items you can find if you keep your eyes open. I bought that coach bag to the right for $10. YES $10. You can not beat that. A real leather quality bag that has lasted me years. The great thing about leather goods is because they are made out of a natural material, they can be fixed up if there is something broken or scratched.

The scarf in the middle could also be used as a blanket or a tablecloth. Great piece for the winter… I may have found it in the table cloth section at my local thrift store.

Just recently I scored these maroon leather booties. Barely worn. they were $20 at GoodWill and I added some of my favorite leather conditioner and they are good as new.

Home Goods.

You can find really great local, eclectic and simple pieces to match with any home decor. Planters, Lamps, artwork.. the list can go on and on. These are some of the items I have found. The tripod lamp was a great find at a GoodWill in Boston. I did have to buy a lampshade for it (lampshade from bed bath and beyond). The lighthouse painting was a painting I found at a local antique store for $29. Artwork can get pricey and to find something with a neat thick wood frame and muted colors, like I enjoy in my home, it was a must have for me. The decorative vase was something I got when we bout our first house thinking I could use it just about anywhere. It is currently on my nightstand.

You can find pretty much anything that has been gently loved and repurpose it in your wardrobe or home. I look forward to hearing what items you find. Think about how you are helping the environment, saving money, and finding unique pieces no one else has. Usually you can find better quality than buying new as well.. but that is for another post.

Have you ever been thrifting? If so what are some of your favorite finds?

Until next time.
